Holiday season driving dangers

Driving is a major part of our lives, but the holiday season makes it even more dangerous than usual. The holiday season is upon us, and as you are out shopping, running errands, or visiting family and friends in Connecticut, it’s worthwhile to take a moment and be extra cautious. From drinking and driving to increased traffic due to more people on the road, these four driving dangers can take you by surprise and leave you wondering what happened.

Alcohol

Drinking alcohol lowers your judgment, making it easier for someone to get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol or drugs. Drunk driving behavior also increases around the holidays because people spend more time socializing, and holiday parties are often filled with alcohol.

Poor weather conditions

Holiday weather may be beautiful, but a few snow days can lead to more accidents than normal. Getting caught in bad weather can be enough to put you in the wrong lane, wash out a stop sign, or cause an accident just because you don’t feel like making a risky decision.

Fatigue

If you’re traveling long distances over the holiday season, you will probably be exhausted. Sleepy drivers cause more than 25% of fatal accidents on the road. Ensure you get enough sleep before hitting the road and limit your driving to avoid fatigue. Also, if you must be on the road during certain hours, consider taking a nap or getting a hotel room instead of pushing yourself to keep going.

Unfamiliar drivers

Familiar drivers are the ones that you know, but unfamiliar drivers pose a much greater threat. They will be on the roads, whether visiting town or visiting family and friends. So be aware of your surroundings and be alert to any possible dangers with added traffic on certain days.
