Partnership aims to increase bicyclist safety

Keeping cyclists safe isn’t something that can be effectively done if only the bicyclists are trying. A partnership announced by Uber and the League of American Bicyclists is a step in the right direction when it comes to keeping people riding bikes safe.

During the 2020 National Bike Summit, which was held virtually, these two entities noted that the safety partnership is going to work toward keeping everyone on the roads safer. This is an issue that definitely needs to be addressed because of the increase in cycling crash fatalities that’s occurred in recent years, namely 2018.

Safety training

Uber drivers are going to be able to undergo safety training regarding how to drive around bicycles. This is especially important in areas where new bicycle lanes and other additions are just now being installed. While the course won’t be mandatory, every driver who is willing to take it is showing how much they care about those with whom they share the roads.

Advocating for basic safety points like driving an appropriate speed, improving street designs and utilizing automotive technologies can help to keep bicyclists safe. It can also improve the safety of others on the roads because drivers are operating their vehicles in an appropriate manner.

The safety training doesn’t end there. There is also a plan to create a safety course for Uber’s JUMP-branded e-bikes and scooters. This can help users to learn how to bike safely if they aren’t familiar with the concepts.

Accidents are often serious

Around 40,000 people die in vehicle crashes each year. The increase in cars and SUVs on the roadways has made it more difficult for bicyclists to remain safe. They are at a greater risk of being killed or catastrophically injured.

Wearing a helmet can minimize the risk of some brain injuries, as well as some neck injuries. This is another important component in the fight against cyclist injuries. While the mainstream Uber drivers might not need to be concerned with it, the individuals who use JUMP should be.

Ultimately, cyclists can only do their part in staying safe. Anyone who’s struck by a vehicle while they’re bicycling should ensure they get the medical care they need. They can then seek compensation for the damages, including the medical expenses they suffered because of the crash if the driver was responsible for the wreck.
